German auto parts supplier ZF has signed an agreement with a global manufacturer that includes planned volume production of brake-by-wire technology to equip nearly 5 million vehicles with electro-mechanical braking (EMB) over the duration of the contract.
Along with electro-mechanical brake and by-wire technology on the rear brakes, the project will also integrate ZF's integrated brake control (IBC) and traditional front calipers, creating a hybrid braking system of by-wire and hydraulic that gives the manufacturer the strength of durability. .
The agreement will also provide ZF's Electric Recirculating Ball Steering Gear (RBSG) steering technology. EMB, as a key component of brake-by-wire technology, forms the basis of a software-defined vehicle that will lead to new functions and features, such as automatic braking and emergency steering, according to the company.
ZF's EMB is at the heart of its “dry brake” system, which requires no brake fluid. Brake pressure is therefore not generated by fluid pressure in the hydraulic system, but by electric motors. Brake signals from the pedal to the electric motor are also transmitted electronically.
EMB works with IBC, a non-vacuum, fully integrated electro-hydraulic system that provides high performance automatic emergency braking, full energy recovery and redundant reverse options up to full automatic steering for passenger cars and light truck segments.
The hybrid system is created by an electric system at the rear axle and hydraulics at the front, including ZF's Colette-type caliper, available in passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in single and twin piston designs.
The RBSG is a 48 V electric gear designed to replace current hydraulic systems as an integrated unit that reduces vehicle assembly costs. It enables ADAS features up to Level 2 and improved steering and performance.
