Tesla is recalling 27,185 Cybertrucks due to camera image delay

The Tesla Cybertruck has been recalled, too.

The National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) sent a remember the Tesla Cybertruck campaign on September 26. The recall includes 27,185 2024 Cybertrucks they have rear cameras with image lag issues.

The recall notice posted by NHTSA notes that the image transmitted by the rearview camera in the cabin display may be delayed. That's a delay violate federal law due to presenting safety issues.

NHTSA said the problem stems from the system not completing the shutdown process before it is instructed to restart. If the driver puts the electric truck in reverse and starts to back up before the system completes the shutdown and start-up process, the correct image may not appear within the two seconds allotted for reversing the vehicle. This falls under FMVSS 111, S6.23 standards.

Affected trucks may not display the rearview camera broadcast image for 6 to 8 seconds while in reverse. The display under these conditions will appear blank.

Trucks built between Nov. 13 2023 and September 14, 2024 that have been or are running low voltage hardware software applications are affected.

Tesla became aware of the issue on September 12 and conducted an internal investigation that concluded on September 19. The automaker determined that a non-compliance exists and will be recalled. As of September 25 Tesla is aware of 45 warranty claims and related consumer issues regarding the problem, but no crashes or injuries have been reported.

As of September 19 Tesla began rolling out an over-the-air (OTA) software update that will fix the problem and ensure that the backup camera is properly visible with a two-second response time.

Tesla will email recall notices to affected Cybertruck owners shortly after September 30.

This issue marks the the fifth recall of Cybertruck, sold in less than a year. Those recalled ranged from a clogged motor washer and loose trim to “stuck” accelerator pedals.
