Earlier today, global mining giant Fortescue announced plans to begin work at its new Detroit plant producing HV marine batteries that will initially be used by EVOA to power a range of luxury yachts, wake boats, and tenders – and they have. come to Fast Charging to tell us all about it!
The mining giant's Fortescue Zero division is opening a North American Advanced Manufacturing Center in Detroit, next year – and now we know that its first product will be an advanced, high-capacity marine battery built around the company's Scalable Battery Module (SBM). technology.
“The Marine Battery Packs we designed and will manufacture for EVOA in Detroit
it's just the beginning of what's possible with the technology we've created,” said Fortescue Energy CEO Mark Hutchinson. “Our Scalable Battery Module product is flexible and adaptable to a variety of products and markets. We've pushed innovation and engineering to the limit everywhere from racetracks to mine sites and now our customers are starting to see the benefits of our real-world knowledge and find a clean solution to their battery needs that helps reduce investment and risk in their design and development process.”
Fortescue describes the EVOA-produced Marine Battery Pack as a lightweight, high-efficiency product that delivers 30kWh to 34kWh per pack, and is designed to support EVOA's most powerful engines, 1,000+ hp. The company insists that fast charging capabilities will be baked into the new batteries, and effective charging times are estimated at less than 30 minutes to reduce.
the downtime is caused by charging.
That charging time is next
30 minute quest. DCFC's prime time would have raised eyebrows a few weeks ago – but last week's announcement that Fortescue is driving the technology behind a big, all-electric heavy-duty machine solution (like the Liebherr T264E rigid hull truck, above) with a new machine, a 6 MW fast charger Fast DC that can charge a large 1,900 kWh tow truck battery in less than thirty minutes has changed all that.
The game has just changed, and there are waterfront megawatt charging projects in the works to support the idea that electric boats won't be stuck charging for long.
Fortescue's Marine Battery Pack solution can be configured as a multi-pack Power System, providing the flexibility to support smaller and larger vessels.
We were lucky enough to have Fortescue Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Carlisle join us for today's episode of Fast Charging to discuss Fortescue Zero, the company's major steps toward carbon neutrality, and more. Enjoy!
