President Joe Biden is making a trip to Baltimore to announce $147 million in EPA awards to the city's ports, which will support electrification efforts, clean up carbon emissions, and support 2,000 union jobs at the port – but that's just a small part of the big deal. , a $3 billion announcement.
That $3 billion investment from President Biden's Energy Depreciation Act will be used nationally in the form of 55 award nominees across 27 states and territories (read: Puerto Rico), with the goal of upgrading and improving existing port infrastructure. At the same time, the funds will help ship operators and drayage vessels to electrify while fighting the climate crisis.
The White House says the Clean Ports program will support an estimated 40,000 jobs in the national economy, including 6,500 new manufacturing jobs. The awards are expected to increase demand for American-made electronic equipment by at least sixfold over the life of the program.
Those facilities could range from superchargers like the one at the Port of Los Angeles, or the 400-ton supercharger recently commissioned at the Port of San Diego — and providing electric tow trucks and associated charging depots. with them.
Although they are a major economic driver, our country's ports are a major source of pollution for workers and surrounding communities. Communities living near ports and other transportation corridors are exposed to toxic pollution that can cause respiratory and heart damage, especially in children.
The funds announced today will support the purchase of battery-electric and hydrogen-powered equipment for human use and maintenance, including more than 1,500 units of material handling equipment, 1,000 drayage trucks, 10 trains, and 20 ships, as well as shore power. marine systems, electric vehicle charging infrastructure with hydrogen and fuel, and solar power generation.
