It is time to open a new chapter in the history books. Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe said now is the time to act on climate change to protect the world for our children and their children's children.
Rivian is more than just another car manufacturer. It's not even your average EV maker. The company's overall mission is “to create products and services that help our planet transition to carbon neutral energy and transportation.”
It is also possible to build some of the most unique EVs on the road today. Rivian's “Electric Mobility Vehicles,” the R1T van and R1S SUV, are designed for more than just getting from point A to point B.
They can also plow through more than 3 meters of water, climb 100%, and take off faster than your average sports car.
However, Rivian is doing a lot behind the scenes, besides selling EVs, “to build the kind of future that is right for our children and our children's children.”
All aspects of the company are designed for a sustainable future. Rivian's battery packs can be easily removed for recycling or other uses. Its interior includes 100% animal-free materials, and the Rivian charging network (Rivian Adventure Network) is powered entirely by renewable energy.
Rivian is also rapidly adding to its portfolio of clean energy projects, growing wind, solar, and hydropower across the US.
The company's scale-up solar project in Tennessee and the Starfire Solar project in a former coal mine in Kentucky are already bringing renewable energy to local businesses and communities.
Rivian's CEO says now is the time to act on climate change
Rivian knows that building EVs is not enough. On Tuesday, Scaringe issued an emergency announcement, saying that now is the time to make history.
Scaringe says we are living through “the most important times in recorded human history.”
Society has advanced greatly in the past few hundred years thanks to new technology and industrial power, producing skills that were previously unimaginable. However, the same technology is destroying the only home we have, slowly but surely.
Growing up loving cars, Scaringe loved every aspect of them, from the concept of driving to the freedom they offered.
As he grew older, he realized that cars, while very important to the development of society, “are at the same time the source of the impact they have on our climate.”
The same cars he loved played a major role in reproducing carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. In just a few generations, we have taken what has accumulated over hundreds of millions of years and redistributed CO2 back into the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels in just over 150 years.
According to Scaringe, we are “at the beginning of seeing the implications” of that. You may have seen it on those hot days or heard about the growing storms and weather in the news.
Although still in its early stages, these changes will, little by little, “make the planet uninhabitable.”
Not just for humans, but we are already seeing an unprecedented rate of extinction on Earth.
Scaringe said this is the time we have a choice. In a perfect world, when we look back in another few thousand years, there will be a small blip called the age of gasoline. It will cover how people rapidly industrialized with new advanced technologies but also developed a deep dependence on fossil fuels.
The next chapter will hopefully explain how we have developed new technologies to eliminate fossil fuels before we put all the carbon back into the atmosphere.
Rivian's leader explained that these changes must start now. We need to continue to add renewable energy to our grid while replacing the 1.5 billion gas-powered vehicles on the road with EVs.
The road may not be perfect, but we have to start somewhere. The best part of EVs is that they are clean and efficient over time. It is time to protect our only home for our children and their children's children.'
