Volkswagen's low-cost ID.2 EV is on the way, with an SUV version to follow

Despite several EV models facing delays, Volkswagen's cheapest model yet, the ID.2, is still on track for launch. The company has confirmed that an entry-level EV will be launched in late 2025, marking a new “debut” for the German auto giant.

Volkswagen unveiled the ID.2all concept last March, a new entry-level EV that will start at under $27,000 (€25,000).

Thomas Shafer, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars, said the ID.2 “shows where we want to take the brand” with advanced technology and “excellent design.” He wasn't kidding.

At the LA Auto Show this week, VW's head of technology development, Kai Grünitz, confirmed A motor vehicle that the “ID” of the brand of electric vehicles of the brand is expected to be revised. Grünitz noted that a “big development” is coming, starting in 2026, with a new style.

The company's R&D boss said VW is “going back to where we started” with designs inspired by icons of the past such as the Golf.

Volkswagen's updated look will be based on the ID.2 concept, which chief designer Andreas Mindt promises is even better than the concept.

Volkswagen's affordable ID.2 EV is launching soon

Said Mindt, who was brought back to lead VW's design A motor vehicle earlier this year, “It's 100% consistent with our brand values: it's going to be stable and delicious with our secret sauce—but in a different way.”

The interior will also feature a new design theme with elements from Volkswagen's past. One feature we know about are the “Classic” and “Vintage” drive modes, which feature a driver display based on the Beetle or Golf era.

Grünitz confirmed that Volkswagen's ID.2 EV is still on track for a late 2025 or early 2026 launch. It will lead the new “first place” for VW. He added, “Customers will see a change, a much bigger change than expected.

An SUV model will be launched at the Munich Motor Show in September 2025 and there is also a GTI model.

Volkswagen's ID.2 will be the first EV based on its new MEB Entry Platform, with an SUV to follow. The ID.2all concept covers a range of up to 279 miles (450 km).

The company describes the entry-level EV as “as spacious as a Golf” but “as inexpensive as a Polo.” Although it is smaller than the Polo, it packs more space inside thanks to the extended wheelbase.
