Celebrating Today's Milestone with Galp: Advancing Hydrogen in Europe


We are proud to share today's milestone in our collaboration with Galp, which marks significant progress in the installation of the electrolyzer at the Sines Refinery and an important step forward in hydrogen production in Portugal and across Europe.

Galp installs 10th electrolyser in Sines 100 MW Green Hydrogen project

  • This green hydrogen production unit will be the largest in Europe
    when it starts working, it is expected in the second half of 2026.
  • This project places the Sines Refinery in a very good position
    in the transformation of the European energy sector.

Galp has completed the installation of ten electrolysis modules, each with a capacity of 10MW, which, together, will form a new green hydrogen production unit under construction at the Sines Refinery, the largest in Europe when it starts operating, in the second half of this year.

With a combined capacity of 100 MW, the unit will enable the production of up to 15,000 tons of renewable hydrogen per year, replacing 20 percent of the gray hydrogen currently used in Galp's refinery operations. This change will allow a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of 110,000 tonnes per year (Scope 1 and 2, CO₂e).

“With this pioneering project, Galp is close to producing green hydrogen on an industrial scale – a historic moment for European refining and a demonstration of the growing strategic importance of Sines within the Iberian energy system,” said Ronald Doburg, Member of the Executive Board in charge of Galp's industrial activities. “It is also an important step in the development of a new generation of low carbon fuels that will enable the decarbonisation of activities that cannot be electrified,” he added.

The GenEco™ modules, developed by US-based Plug Power Inc., are manufactured in the United Arab Emirates and shipped by sea to Sines. The installation of each 42-tonne module is carried out with the support of two cranes and a team of 12 people.

The decision to build this electrolysis unit was taken in September 2023, along with the decision to proceed with the HVO/SAF production unit, representing a combined investment of 650 million euros. This investment will enable Galp to produce low-carbon fuels for aviation, marine transport and road transport.
