Charged EVs | Ampere and STMicroelectronics collaborate on power boxes and cooling systems for electric motors


EV manufacturer Ampere, formed by Renault and STMicroelectronics, has announced an agreement starting in 2026 between the two companies for the supply of silicon carbide (SiC) power modules as part of their collaboration on Ampere's Powerbox electric powertrain inverter.

The powerbox is designed for maximum size performance across the Ampere line, and supports both 400 V and 800 V configurations.

The power box includes three SiC-based power modules, an excitation module—which provides the electrical excitation needed by the engine or generator to control the magnetic field inside the engine—and a cooling baseplate designed to dissipate heat from the back side of the power module. , to simplify the thermal management and cooling process.

“By working together upstream, we have been able to improve and secure the supply of key components for our electric trains, to provide more efficient EVs with increased range and improved charging time. It is in line with Ampere's strategy to master the entire electric power value chain in its e-powertrain, leveraging STMicroelectronics' technology in power modules,” said Philippe Brunet, SVP Powertrain & EV Engineering, Ampere.
