Charged EVs | Bobcat's journey of electronic innovation: inside the T7X platform (Video)

The off-highway equipment industry is undergoing major changes, and electrification is a major area. Bobcat, a leading innovator in this space, has introduced its all-electric platform, the T7X. Unlike the traditional approach of simply replacing diesel engines with batteries and electric motors, Bobcat engineers embraced a complete redesign, using the unique advantages of electrification to improve both performance and productivity.

It has been charged recently spoke with Bobcat's Vice President of Global Innovation Joel Honeyman to learn more about the design of the T7X Platform.

Central to Bobcat's electrification strategy is the removal of electronic systems, which are replaced by electric actuators. This change allows precise control via software. For example, electric machines can quickly adjust current levels to improve power delivery, enabling features such as real-time injury prevention and increased lifting capacity. Honeyman explains that the T7X loader showcases the power of electrified products to surpass their diesel counterparts, providing more torque, quieter operation and other unique features.

Embracing electrification comes with challenges, especially for a company with more than six decades of expertise in diesel and hydraulics. Early internal skepticism was overcome by using rapid prototyping, with engineers building an electric concept car in just six weeks. Demonstrating this machine to management was important in demonstrating the power of electrified equipment. The result was a commitment to innovation, culminating in the T7X and additional products such as electric tillers and zero-turn mowers.

Looking ahead, Bobcat is optimistic about the future of electric construction equipment. With advances in charging technology and software capabilities, these devices can be designed to meet the changing needs of operators and fleets.
