German-Swiss international equipment manufacturer Liebherr and Australian-headquartered steel mining company Fortescue have announced an agreement for the development and supply of zero emission technology that, once in series production, will be available to mining companies worldwide.
The partnership includes a total of 475 zero-emission Liebherr machines including 55 electric excavators, 60 battery-powered dozers, and 360 T 264 autonomous trucks that will start being certified on site by the end of 2025.
The T 264 trucks will be equipped with the Fortescue Zero battery power system and the jointly developed Autonomous Haulage Solution (AHS), both designed to be scalable to be retrofitted to existing Liebherr trucks. AHS includes an energy management system that coordinates the operations of the fixed charging trucks and ensures that the charger is fully utilized without queuing on site.
The Fortescue Zero battery power system will also be integrated into the electric version of Liebherr's flagship mining dozer, the PR 776. As part of the agreement, Liebherr and Fortescue will release a complete battery and electric independent extraction solution for large mining operations.
