The connection created by the environment is suitable to reduce the energy loss providing energy transfer up to 90%..

Smiths Interconnect, a leading supplier of diversified electronic components, subsystems, microwave, optical and radio frequency products, announced today the introduction of Hypertac Green Connect TM, a new high-performance lead-free interconnect technology and the Beryllium-free hyperboloid, in its invention. reliable communication technology for demanding applications.

As the world experiences a major change on a scale not seen in a century – the transition from gasoline engines to electric power – the importance of batteries has risen to the forefront of design in all kinds of systems. This includes their important role in applications involving rail transport, defense, commercial buses, mining operations, ferries and ports.

An important feature that unites all these various applications is the method of communication. Currently, existing connection solutions in the market suffer from high power loss due to high connection resistance.

In response to this challenge, Smiths Interconnect proudly presents an improved design of the original hyperboloid interconnect aimed at solving the problem of power loss.

This state-of-the-art solution ensures the full use of every kilowatt-hour of energy stored in the battery, improving efficiency and overall performance.

Designed specifically for the battery systems market and related applications, this advanced hyperboloid contact design provides a robust connection capable of handling continuous currents of up to 500 amperes.

By facilitating efficient and long-term energy transfer, this solution promises to revolutionize the way energy is managed and used in various applications across industries.

The low contact resistance of Hypertac Green ConnectTM technology reduces heat build-up allowing the contacts to carry large currents in small contact circles without affecting temperature rise.

The technology uses a set of socket wires, precisely fitted to form a hyperboloid-shaped sleeve, elastic and conductive. When the mating pin fits into the socket, the sleeve expands around it, providing multiple lines of electrical contact with the mating pin, as opposed to the few “high spots” in conventional contacts.

Plus, the beryllium and lead finishes from Hypertac Green Connect TM provide game-changing performance and environmental benefits. Both beryllium and lead require significant drug compliance management. Certificates of compliance, declarations of meeting limits, or requesting, administering and monitoring exemptions are time-consuming and expensive. Complete removal of these items reduces all documentation compliance requirements. Most importantly, however, removing these materials improves the safety of our production process and for customers, because the materials of concern are completely removed from our systems and the need for expensive disposal in a safe place is eliminated.

Finally, thanks to the improved crimp design of the socket, more contact area is established between the contact body and the multi-stranded cable, ultimately contributing to an incomparably lower contact resistance.

“To provide an important solution in the growing battery systems market including high-voltage power packs for electric mobility, we have developed a new communication technology designed to provide unmatched performance by reducing energy loss” said Mark Kelleher, VP and General Manager of Connectors. Business Unit at Smiths Interconnect. “I am excited to introduce this advanced solution to the market that combines the proven original hyperboloid technology with the latest environmentally friendly requirements.”

Lead and Beryllium free Hypertac Green ConnectTM technology provides stable and great connection solutions due to:

  • High current carrying capacity (300A with temperature rise <50°C) capable of transferring up to 90% more power in 500A boost mode even after 10,000 input/output cycles compared to other technologies.
  • Unmatched premium hyperboloid socket designed to IEC62196 and SAE J1772 standards
  • Low Contact Resistance from 25 μΩ (40 μΩ after aging)
  • Up to 40,000 mating cycles and low input and output power.
  • Advanced crimp design of the socket (patent pending) that provides more contact area between the contact body and the multi-strand cable, ensuring an incomparably low contact resistance.
  • Fully RoHS and REACH compliant materials with no exception: no SVHC or Beryllium copper used.
