Batteries play an important role in vehicle performance, so it's important to separate fact from fiction and make informed decisions that help ensure peak performance.
MISCONCEPTION: You should never store the battery directly on concrete to avoid damage.
Sometimes that might be good advice, but today's battery cases are made of tough plastics like polycarbonate or polypropylene for high impact resistance. These plastics are strong and don't degrade the way hard rubber can. So, the truth is that it is best to put the battery directly on the concrete.
INCORRECT CONDITIONS: Any type of charger can be used to recharge a battery, regardless of battery chemistry, make or model.
Different battery types (AGM vs Flooded) and chemistries (lead acid vs Li-Ion) require different charging profiles for proper recharging. Using a wet charging profile on an AGM battery can cause the battery to overcharge due to a higher charging voltage than the AGM should be able to handle.
MISCONCEPTION: Your alternator has no effect on battery performance.
Alternator sizing in relation to electrical system requirements and battery capacity and number of batteries should be considered when choosing the right size alternator. Generally, when you add hotel loads or auxiliary batteries your alternator capacity should increase as well.
NO: The battery can be installed anywhere in your vehicle.
The further away the battery is from the charging source, the greater the impact of voltage loss caused by long cables. It may be necessary to use a heavy gauge cable to ensure that the charging voltage is correct at the battery terminals.
Also, temperature is a concern, so batteries near heat sources will have a negative impact on battery performance.
