Damen sets the world record for the most powerful electric tugboat

Built by Damen Shipyards and the first fully electric tug to be used in the Middle East, the new RSD-E Tug 2513 Bu Tinah made its record-breaking performance at Khalifa Port during ADIPEC, the world's largest energy conference.

The RSD-E Tug 2513 is based on the already efficient hull design of the standard, diesel-powered RSD Tug 2513, but its new, complete power generation system enables it to provide smoke-free operation in situations where oil or fuel leaks – say especially it's bad.

But, although the “clean” aspect of all-electric operation is obvious, the Guinness World Record of performance shows that the Damen RSD-E Tug 2513 is up to any task its owners put on it.

“This Guinness World Record achievement shows that the transition to alternative energy does not come at the expense of performance,” explained Maritime & Shipping Cluster, AD Ports Group, Captain Ammar Mubarak Al Shaiba. “We are very proud that the first electric traction in the Middle East is also making waves around the world with this award and the fact that it simultaneously improves the sustainability of our operations and cost effectiveness through fuel savings. it is important. This vessel is now an integral part of our Maritime Services fleet and our electrification strategy.”

For its record, Damen RSD-E Tug 2513 Gather us record the average maximum bollard pull of 78.2 tons (about 86 'Murican tons). The tugboat-setting tugboat can do two tugs on a single charge, and can be recharged with a marine DC fast charger in just two hours.

Electric traction achieves a Guinness world record
Damen RSD-E Tug; with Damen.

We have come a long way since 2021, when a 6MW electric boat was pulling about 50 tons of bollard weight. A jump of around 50% without the same weight or mass gain is a sign of technological advancement – and we're here for you.
