Knowing the right battery solution to use to power your Recreational Vehicle (RV) can be a challenging task, especially given the different chemicals available on the market today. When this topic comes up, we find that some customers have more questions than answers. Below, please find a few of the most frequently asked questions we receive and advice from our team to help you achieve optimal RV battery performance — whether it's for fun or vacationing with family and friends.
As always, be sure to follow the manufacturer's care guidelines and direct any questions to your battery technician.
What is the best battery to use for my RV?
In general, it is best practice to invest in a battery that will meet the needs of how you use your RV.
For example, if you're using your RV for boondocking, camping or long-term use, you'll want a battery that can cycle multiple times, charge quickly and efficiently, support all available loads at the required time and fit into the available space inside. the closet. Dual purpose battery, Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) Thin Plate Pure Lead (TPPL), like ODYSSEY® EnerSys battery, is an excellent way to power your car and meets all the qualities listed above.
Can I outsize my RV battery?
No; technically, you can't outgrow your RV battery. However, you may have excess capacity that you are not using and that will not save money and will take up unnecessary space and add weight.
Can an RV battery charger charge more than one battery chemistry?
THE ODYSSEY® battery chargers from EnerSys can charge a variety of popular battery chemistries including old flooded acid, AGM, AGM with TPPL technology (AGM2) and lithium-ion. They are lightweight, highly portable and compatible with most 12-volt battery models.
What is the proper way to charge my RV battery?
Most batteries should be kept fully charged and free from contamination. This will increase your battery life and overall performance. This is especially true for lead-based products.
Should I use more than one battery chemistry to power my RV and onboard electronics?
It may make sense to use independent systems to manage house loads and chassis loads. This can lead to a method where a lot of chemicals are used, however, keeping simple and interchangeable solutions will have the greatest advantage of remote use and reliability. Dual purpose batteries are very beneficial for all applications you can have in an RV.
What should I do if one of my batteries fails while boondocking off-grid?
Remove the dead battery from the battery pack. During this time, you may need to adjust your power consumption to accommodate the reduced battery capacity. For example, try to limit your use of high-powered appliances such as in-cabinet entertainment centers or kitchen appliances. Additionally, it is beneficial to have an emergency plan on how to get to the nearest service or replacement center.
Should I have a spare battery kept in my car in case the installed one suddenly fails?
Battery failure is always a risk but running multiple batteries in parallel installed in your RV allows for natural backup power and removal of the failed unit. The extra capacity can also lead to reduced cycling in the battery bank so having an extra battery stored on board is usually unnecessary. Your batteries are still working, installed should be able to get you to a service center for more technical support.
