A Windsor, Ontario-based company says it's aiming for a more sustainable future after adding a dozen new electric vehicles to its fleet — including a state-of-the-art, 55-foot electric bucket truck.
Based on the Class 7 (33,000 lb. GVWR) International eMV Series BEV, the Terex EV takes the eMV's 291 kWh battery and adds a Terex Optima 55-foot aerial device and HyPower SmartPTO system to create a fully functional utility vehicle. unable to work. anything their diesel counterparts can do while providing better, safer working conditions for utility workers.
“We have 12 EVs,” said Gary Rossi, president and CEO, Enwin Utilities. That number represents a full 10% of all federal vehicles. “Our flagship is our 55-foot electric bucket truck. It's very quiet,” continued Rossi. “So (the truck) allows us, our employees, to communicate better. It doesn't sound like much in the community when they are doing repairs in someone's yard.”
That sentiment is echoed by Terex, itself. The company says its HyPower SmartPTO (power take off), which replaces a mechanical PTO, avoids a noisy engine at idle while reducing worker exposure to toxic emissions.
The utility company says the new electric bucket truck cost about $1 million in Canada — but while that may sound like a lot, Rossi says the price is about the same as what the ICE version of the bucket truck will cost.
“It's all about building the future of Windsor and really connecting the battery factory to the road that's being built and showing that Windsor is a leader in this,” said Drew Dilkens, Mayor of Windsor. “I don't have an internal combustion engine car,” added Mayor Wilkins. “I only have two electric cars. My wife and I are making a change starting in 2019 and I don't see myself going back.”

Enwin says their commitment to clean energy extends beyond their vehicles. The company recently unveiled a large MW solar rooftop measurement facility at its Rhodes Drive headquarters with more than 3,000 solar panels. The site, one of Canada's largest solar installations, generates enough clean electricity to power 300 homes every year.
