Ford aims to make life easier and less confusing for EV buyers.
On Monday, Ford CEO Jim Farley posted on LinkedIn that the automaker will offer free home chargerand installation, for its customers who purchase or lease a Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning, or E-Transit.
Farley said the Level 2 home charger will come with the car or can be delivered when buyers are ready. Ford plans to have have the charger installed by a professional to consumers free of charge.
The installation of a free charger needs to be considered a “normal installation,” and that has not been clearly defined.
Recently, Farley has taken long road trips in both EVs in the Western US and Europe. The takeaway, according to Farley, is that consumers want “convenience, peace of mind and professional service.”
Farley said that home charging that Ford has learned is important to overall electric vehicle adoption in the US as well about 90% of consumers they said they are more likely to buy an EV if they know they can charge it at home. Where, who, and what costs are confusing for consumers, according to the official. This latest incentive takes the guesswork out of the charging situation at home in Farley's view.
Ford was the first automaker to tackle the issue of public charging infrastructure outside of Tesla, in partnership with Tesla. In 2023 Farley and Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that Tesla's Superchargers will be open to Fords. Farley also pledged that Ford would accept it Tesla's NACS charging port in future EVs.
Earlier in 2024 Ford began delivering CCS to NACS adapters for free to F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E owners as Tesla opened up its Supercharger network to Ford EV owners.
