Here's what to expect when the Lectric XP 4.0 e-bike goes on sale in the US


Lectric Ebikes has long set the standard for other companies to follow in the budget electric bike space, continually releasing new models that offer unprecedented value. A new cargo bike with more features? They did it. A new off-roader with better parts? They do that, too. But what about the company's best-selling model, the Lectric XP 3.0 folding e-bike wheel? It's awaiting an update, and here's what to expect.

Believe it or not, it's been two years since the Lectric XP 3.0 was introduced in early November 2022. That model has since dominated the industry, offering sub-$1,000 budget riders better than ever. has risen to the top of the list of best-selling e-bikes in the US.

With a top speed of 28 mph (45 km/h), hydraulic disc brakes, suspension, built-in rack, heavy-duty/commuter capacity, and multiple battery sizes, it has become the go-to electric bike for thousands of new riders. every month. I put my family members on XP 3.0s, I bought a lot of XP 3.0s to donate to the poor, and it's the model I chose when I disguised myself as a food delivery worker to see the world with e-bike couriers. the eyes.

But nothing lasts forever, and two years is a long time in the electric bike industry. We don't yet know exactly when the Lectric XP 4.0 will arrive to replace the current best-selling US electric bike model, but you better believe that Lectric's designers in Phoenix have been brainstorming for a while now. And I'd bet dollars to donuts that these are some of those ideas.

Component quality improvement

With every new launch this year, we've watched Lectric eBikes change its purchasing power by bringing us higher quality parts than we deserve at these price points. XPeak tends to get insanely high quality forks. Lectric One has found electricity that could cost as much as an entire bike if you tried to buy it wholesale. And the Lectric XP Lite 2.0 offers a Gates belt drive for under $900. All of this is a no-brainer, or at least it was until Lectric started waving its wallet around in the offices of high-end component manufacturers who don't usually see customers in this affordable price range.

That means the Lectric XP 4.0 is likely to benefit from that same purchasing power. I can foresee major improvements including a higher suspension fork, better hydraulic disc brakes, and a torque sensor for improved pedaling. I don't think the derailleur will make a huge leap in quality (maybe an 8-speed Shimano Tourney?), but a color screen may be on the cards, as are better bolt grips and other comfort enhancements. We might see better fixed seats and better tires.

But for the love of all that is holy in this world, if those who do good on Utopia Rd even think about touching the right side of the twist throttle, then by the beard of Zeus we will have words…

More power?

There's a real chance that the XP 4.0 could be more powerful, especially since Lectric has grown fond of its M24 electric motor, which has graced models like the XPeak 2.0 and XPedition 2.0. That 750W motor puts out just over 1,300W of power, thanks to Lectric's use of higher current speed controllers than most of its competitors.

In fact, the Lectric XP 3.0 is probably the most powerful “500W” e-bike out there right now, but that doesn't mean it'll always be in the five-hundred groups.

A power boost isn't a given, and Lectric still keeps that high-powered motor in its premium models. After all, they can't just give us all the good stuff at such a low price. Or can they?

No price change

Speaking of price changes, I find it very hard to believe that XP 4.0 will launch for anything other than US $999. Lectric has only changed the price of this model once, raising it from the original $899 for the XP 1.0 to $999 for the XP 2.0. Since then, they have stayed away from price increases on the XP line.

Lectric founder and CEO Levi Conlow recently explained at the Micromobility America 2024 conference that whenever the company's efficiency causes margins to rise “too high” (a foreign concept to most companies), they lower the price or release a new version. of a bike with more features. And so that will probably be exactly what the 4.0 will be – another $999 bike, but this time with more features.

Design and build

I don't expect we will see major structural changes to the bike's structure. Of course, there will be a new frame. But I expect the company to keep the same boxy tube design they've been using since the first XP bike was released in late 2019. They even use it on their XPedition cargo bike even though there is no real reason for it (no batteries). not mounted inside the frame) without continuing the design with the Lite, XP, and XP Trike lines.

Lectric has been investing heavily in third-party certification, including both structural testing and electronic certifications such as UL compliance. That's likely to continue with XP 4.0, which means we could see an improved certification that shows more confidence in the bike's ability to haul cargo and passengers.

The color scheme probably won't change much. Black and white has been XP's MO for years now, and that's an improvement from when they were only available in white. Yes, we've seen splashes of Lectric's blue color on many of the product's models, and the XP 4.0 is unlikely to be any different. But expect it to be more in line with the new XPedition 2.0's color swatch design, not a bright color departure.

Good features?

This is a wild card, and I don't expect Lectric to go nuts with the best features. I don't think we'll be getting any crazy phone apps or wireless charging with a kickstand anytime soon. But we may see the inclusion of value-added features such as anti-crime tracking.

This can easily be done through the use of existing technology such as Apple's FindMy network – something that Lectric's rival Velotric has done well with. Such a feature may add a small cost but can have a large value. In fact, I recently tried to plant that bug in Lectric Co-founder Robby Deziel's ear. I'm proud to have a small ball in the electric bike industry, but even I don't know when Lectric plans to release XP 4.0. From everything I can gather, it hasn't arrived yet.

I may have teased you about all the good things Lectric he can it did in XP 4.0, but I don't think we'll be seeing any of those updates anytime soon soon.

Suffice it to say that if you've been wanting to join in on the XP fun and are somehow one of the few Americans who still don't have XP 3.0, it's still a killer e-bike at an incredible $999. . One day XP 4.0 will probably make us all “ooh” and “ahh” again, but it doesn't seem to be in the cards just yet.
