Following successful domestic launches in the Pacific Northwest, North Carolina, and Mexico, Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) is expanding the reach of its specialty electric fleet to Arizona through longtime partner JB Hunt.
JB Hunt will add a new Freightliner Cascadia semi electric to its Arizona facility soon, and use it to deliver aftermarket truck parts from the DTNA parts distribution center (PDC) in Phoenix to multiple DTNA dealers on a dedicated route.
The Freightliner electric truck is expected to travel about 100 miles on a given day before heading “home” to the Detroit Fill charger installed at Daimler's Phoenix facility.
This historic event marks the first electrification of the entire distribution network of the DTNA market segments, significantly reducing carbon emissions and setting an example for future sustainable transport operations.
“This solution with DTNA is a great example of our commitment to supporting customers' efforts to reduce their carbon footprint and work towards an energy transition,” explained Greer Woodruff, senior vice president of safety, sustainability and maintenance at JB Hunt. “JB Hunt owns and operates several eCascadias on behalf of clients, and our drivers have thoroughly enjoyed their on-board training. As customer interest continues to grow, we are here to pursue a sustainable supply chain in the most economically feasible ways.”
Daimler is analyzing future expansion opportunities in all its internal parts distribution and logistics with a view to electrifying more routes and further reducing the carbon footprint of its transport operations.
JB Hunt will test its use of the charging station for other customers in the area, eventually enabling it to fully integrate zero-emission vehicle solutions into its 3PL companies.
