Jeep is considering hybrids without a US charging port

After seeing success with its 4xe plug-in hybrids, Jeep may add more hybrids are common and on its US schedule, reports Automotive News.

Hybrids are “definitely one of the things we're definitely looking at,” said Jeep VP of product planning Matthew Nyquist in a video conference call with Automotive News and other media outlets, calling it a “natural interpretation” of the current Jeep. plug-in hybrids.

Nyquist didn't give a timeline for when Jeep hybrids might be available comes to the USbut it is noted that the attention of the Stellantis product has been sparked by the lower costs associated with smaller battery packs compared to plug-in hybrids. Hybrids are also expanding across many market segments in the US, Nyquist said, so adding them could help Jeep stay competitive.

This comes after Jeep CEO Antonio Filosa commented earlier this year that it was possible Recon hybrid powertrainit is set to be one of the first all-electric Jeep models in the US, following the Wagoneer S due to hit showrooms later this year. In an interview he had with Autocar in May, Filosa said that Jeep was studying other electric trains for Recon but there are no internal marches.

Plug-in hybrids could be a significant change of course for Jeep. The Wrangler 4xe was best-selling plug-in hybrid in the US, and Jeep is planning a Gladiator 4xe truck to expand its plug-in hybrid lineup, which also includes a 4xe version of the popular Grand Cherokee SUV.

Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares also promised a $25,000 Jeep EV of the US, and the automaker has confirmed extended plug-in versions of the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer 3-row SUVs. So the product already has many electrified options – which are probably very efficient – without using conventional hybrids.
