NEVI Funding: Tracking the construction of America's EV charging network
More and more EVs are on the road every day, and public charging is increasing rapidly. While most charging is done at home, drivers need fast public charging to support long-distance travel and enable consumers without access to home charging to make the transition to electric vehicles. Thankfully, states across the country are working hard to build EV chargers through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Initiative.
The NEVI program provides $7.5 billion to build the backbone of America's EV charging network on highways and in communities. Five billion dollars of funds have been allocated to all 50 states and Puerto Rico to build highway charging. Two and a half billion dollars available as competitive grants to build community tolls and address highway toll gaps. NEVI forms the basis for enabling daily driving and long-distance commuting for EV drivers regardless of where they live.
Where are we now with NEVI?
All infrastructure takes time to build, and EV charging is no exception. The NEVI program is a brand new program created by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act of 2021. As with all infrastructure projects, it took more. stop and go time. We are currently in the third year of a five-year plan, and chargers are operating in eight states, with many, many more to come. EV charging requires contracting, planning, design and engineering, permitting, equipment procurement, and installation. We expect to see more channels come online as districts continue in that process.
