Shell Recharge EV charging (Source: Shell)
Shell Recharge is discontinuing its Shell Sky software for third-party EV chargers in the US and Canada.
Shell Sky is a cloud-based EV charger management software, commonly referred to as CPMS or charging station management system (CSMS). Sky was originally created by software startup Greenlots, which Shell acquired in 2019. Greenlots was eventually renamed Shell Recharge.
Shell Sky is hardware agnostic and uses OCPP, an open protocol for connecting and managing EV chargers, meaning chargers running Shell Sky software can be migrated to other OCPP compliant software providers either remotely or locally.
Shell Recharge will service the third-party EV chargers until April 30, and after that, will turn off the software, and require Shell Recharge Solutions stickers to be removed from the chargers.
This is what happened with Enel X Way JuiceBox EV chargers when that company announced it would be closing in October, but unlike Enel X Way, which only gave nine days notice, Shell is giving 90 days notice.
The company says it will focus on investing in its Shell-owned public charging network, which has more than 70,000 chargers around the world. In an email received by Electrek from Shell to a “valued customer,” a spokesperson wrote that the company “focuses our investments where we have a competitive advantage.”
Its email continues that “Shell has three MOUs [charge point management system] CPMS providers would also be happy to make presentations to these companies if they are interested. ” ChargeLab, which recently completed the migration of more than 1,400 JuiceBox EV chargers, announced support for Shell Recharge customers looking for a new charging management system in early December. Pulse Energy also provides support for the migration of neighboring EV charging stations with Shell Sky software.
