Tesla announces 500 kW charging as it finally delivers V4 Supercharger cabinets


Tesla has announced that it will finally deliver 500 kW of power as it is about to install its long-awaited V4 Supercharger cabinets.

The release of the Supercharger V4 has been a bit of a surprise, to say the least.

Tesla has been rolling out new charging stations for two years and calling them “Supercharger V4”, but they have only been using charging stations.

Supercharger stations are made up of two main parts: the stalls, which are where the charging cable is located, and the cabinets, which are usually located at the back and include all the electrical power.

For all these new “Supercharger V4”, Tesla was actually using Supercharger V3 cabinets. This reduces the power output from the charging stations to 250 kW – though

Today, Tesla officially announced the “V4 Cabinet”, which the car company says will enable it to “deliver up to 500kW of power in cars and 1.2MW in the Semi.”

Here are the key features of the V4 Cabin according to Tesla:

  • Fast charging: It supports 400V-1000V vehicle designs, including 30% fast charging for Cybertruck. S3XY vehicles enjoy the 250kW charging capacity already available in the V3 cabin — charging up to 200 miles in 15 minutes.
  • Fast shipping: The V4 Cabinet enables 8 spaces, 2X stalls per cabinet. Low steps and complexity = more sites get online faster.
  • Next generation hardware: Sharp electronics designed to be the most reliable in the world, with 3X power density allowing high output at low cost.

Tesla reports that its first sites with the new V4 cabinets are now ready for approval. The company expects its first sites to open next year.

We recently reported on Tesla's new Oasis Supercharger project, which combines larger solar panels with battery packs for a mostly off-grid charging station.

At the beginning of the deployment of the Supercharger network, Tesla promised to add solar arrays and batteries to all Supercharger stations, and Musk even said that many stations will be able to work off the grid.

Although Tesla has added solar and batteries to a few stations, most of them do not have their own power system or have small solar canopies.
