Tesla appears to be doubling down on its new “Oasis” Supercharger station concept, which features large solar-powered stations and a microgrid battery system.
However, this new one has less ambition.
Last month, Tesla announced the “Oasis project” (pictured above), which is supposed to be one of Tesla's largest Supercharger stations with several places to pull trucks and trailers, but the real distinguishing feature is the large solar system and battery system that makes the charging station operational. off the grid a lot.
CEO Elon Musk has been saying that the goal of the Supercharger network will be powered by solar and batteries and mainly off-grid since 2016, but Tesla has not yet made this standard.
The announcement of Project Oasis gave us hope that it could finally happen, and now it looks like Tesla is planning a small Oasis.
Marco RP, who tracks Supercharger projects, reported on new construction plans posted for the station in Coalinga, California:
This project is about 50 miles north of Project Oasis – and is on Interstate 5 between Los Angeles and the Bay Area.
We call it the “mini Oasis” not because it has fewer charging stations than the Oasis; it actually has the same number of planned stalls, 168 stalls, but because it doesn't have solar power and more batteries to be able to use it off the grid.
Oasis has 11 MW of planned solar power and 39 MWh of energy storage.
This new project in Coalinga is less than 1 MW of solar and 15.5 MWh of energy storage. In the case of Oasis, the grid complements Tesla's microgrid, and in this new project, Tesla's microgrid complements the grid connection.
But Tesla could eventually expand its solar system and battery storage system to a new station.
The new station also includes restrooms, which Tesla has sometimes used at major stations.
