Tesla has released a new navigation feature to make it easier for people pulling trailers to find charging stations that accept them.
Trailers with electric vehicles are not yet very popular, but they are gaining popularity quickly, as are electric SUVs and towing trucks.
Tesla has had the Model Y and Model X with limited but still useful towing capabilities for a few years, but now with the Cybertruck and the opening of its Supercharger network to other EVs, including many pickup trucks, the automaker is starting to see more. people arriving at its popular charging stations and trailers.
This can be a problem as you don't want to block a few chargers, you will have to pull your trailer out to charge your car. That's less than ideal and something gas-powered cars rarely do at gas stations.
Tesla's solution has been to build several “pull-in” charging points at other Supercharger stations that allow you to park with your trailer while charging (via the Tesla Motors club):
Tesla is currently building some of these stations, but they are still far and few between and hard to find.
The automaker is now making it easier to find out with a new software update. Now, you can click on the Supercharger station, and we'll tell you that we have trailers.
Additionally, if you drive in “trailer mode” and search for charging stations, those with “trailer-friendly” stalls will appear at the top:
However, as always, when traveling long distances in an electric vehicle, it is best to do a little planning about where you will charge ahead of time, especially if you will be towing long distances.
Now that Tesla can distinguish between trailer-friendly and non-trailer stations, the automaker can hopefully add it to its API for other automakers to integrate into their navigation systems as more of them begin to use the Supercharger network.
