Offline functionality shows the new Tesla police car from its UP.FIT segment at the 2024 SEMA show in Las Vegas. This time, the Model S Plaid is reporting for duty.
It is scheduled to be delivered to the public relations program of Los Angeles County Sheriff's DepartmentPlaid has received a new cable to integrate the police lights, located behind the windshield and rear window, as well as the side skirts, to eliminate the aerodynamic drag created by the standard light bar, according to Unplugged Performance.
Other police features include a push bar, high and low siren, and a public address system. All of these devices add weight, but Unplugged Performance accounts for the least weight loss distance to 345 milescompared to 359 miles for the regular Plaid.

The Police-spec Plaid retains the stock tri-motor all-wheel drive powertrain, which produces 1,020 hp and allows for 0-60 mph acceleration in 1.9 seconds, according to Tesla. Unplugged Performance upgraded the brakes and installed lighter wheels, however.
Unplugged Performance also built a Police Tesla Cybertruckwhich was brought to the Irvine Police Department in California earlier this year. As with conventional EVs, California is leading the way in electric police vehicles. Another California police department already has an all-electric fleet, including 10 Tesla Model 3 sedans and 10 Model Y crossovers.

But a recent report found that some California police departments do problem with Tesla Model 3 and Model Y police cars-including one posted by Unplugged Performance-citing problems with not having enough interior space and difficulty getting support and maintenance for used cars. Problems like this stem from the fact that Tesla does not provide a factory police package.
That police departments are willing to buy Tesla police cars modified by aftermarket companies is telling lack of options currently available. Ford—a mainstay of the police car business—provides the police model of the F-150 Lightning and supplies Mustang Mach-E police cars to the New York Police Department. Stellantis also revealed that he is preparing a Dodge Charger Daytona for police service to replace the outgoing Charger.
