Tesla has started sending out invitations to its Robotaxi unveiling event next month with the tagline: “we, the robot.”
For a while, Tesla CEO Elon Musk discussed building a self-driving car, which he called the Tesla Robotaxi.
It was supposed to be launched at an event in August, but it was pushed back to October 10.
Today, Tesla began sending event invitations to several shareholders and media:
Tesla wrote in the invitation that the event will be called 'We, Robot' and will reveal “the future of autonomy”:
Join us at We, Robot – our official unveiling of the autonomous future.
Not much is known about the robot other than indications that it won't have a steering wheel or pedals, and that it will be “Cybertruck-like” in terms of design. It's also possible to see a glimpse of the interior in a video released by Tesla, as well as a test of a highly hidden prototype at the Warner Bros. site. where the event will take place.
It is expected to be on the small side.
With a focus on autonomy, Tesla is expected to showcase its latest Optimus humanoid robots.
Electrek's Take
I think the most important thing to look for is the autonomous hardware that will power the autonomous robot system.
Elon has been promising millions of Tesla owners for years that their cars would take control with software updates. It hasn't happened yet and there is serious doubt that it can be achieved on current hardware.
The fact that Tesla is about to launch a new self-driving car doesn't help those doubts.
Also, if the car doesn't have a steering wheel, it will be interesting to see if Tesla decides to introduce a geo-locked ride-hailing service as well. It's something that Tesla's self-driving competitors, like Waymo, have done for years, and Tesla has been downplaying this approach, opting for a standard AI driver approach, which hasn't worked so far.
It would be interesting to see Tesla confirm this approach.
Finally, I also expect that we will see an update to Optimus. WHAT DO YOU THINK? Let us know in the comment section below.
