The UAW's Stellantis Council met yesterday to discuss the frustrated automaker's “continued failure” to honor the deal that ended the 2023 labor strike, and their latest union memo isn't drawing much traction.
It's not a good time to be Stellantis. Its dealers are suing the leadership and threatening to fire the company's chief executive, Carlos Tavares, as sales continue to boom in North America, it can't deliver its new, top-of-the-line electric Fiat, and the first luxury electric Jeep isn't ready. . And now, things are about to go wrong.
In an email sent by the UAW earlier today (received at 4:55PM CST), UAW President Shawn Fain wrote, “For years, the company has been picking on us plant by plant and we have not had the will and the means to fight back. . Today is different. Because we came together and demanded the right to strike for job security—product commitment—we have the tools to fight and win … We unanimously recommend to the membership that every UAW worker in Stellantis prepare to fight, and we are all ready to fight. vote YES to authorize a strike at Stellantis.”
The dispute appears to stem from Stellantis' inability to commit to new production (and continued employment) at its UAW-owned factories and other failures to meet its obligations to end strikes. This, in spite of the purchase of 3 billion goods released by the end of 2023.
