Meet the new off-road EV
After launching the IONIQ 5 in Seoul in February 2021, Hyundai's mid-size electric SUV has risen steadily in global EV sales charts.
The IONIQ 5 was the sixth best-selling EV in the US last year. In the first eight months of 2024, Hyundai sold nearly 27,000 IONIQ 5s in the US, up 26% from last year. Despite its success, the electric SUV is still being developed.
Hyundai revealed the updated 2025 IONIQ 5 earlier this month, offering a wider range of driving features, features, and styling. It will also come with a new rugged XRT road-focused bumper.
The XRT model “adds significant potential to America's most award-winning EV lineup,” Hyundai said at the time of the reveal.
Hyundai said this off-road model is for those who “want to play for the first time and have all-electric adventures.”
First look at Hyundai's new 2025 IONIQ 5 XRT model
“We designed the IONIQ 5 XRT to provide more Safety, Connectivity, and Performance,” explained Hyundai's senior design manager for the exterior, Brad Arnold.
The XRT trim includes unique features such as digital camouflage cladding, +23mm suspension lift, 18″ black wheels, and XRT-only front and rear bumpers.
Inside, it features floor mats with XRT badges, H-Tex seats with XRT pattern and logo, and special colors (Ultimate Red and Cosmic Blue Pear).
Ahead of delivery, Hyundai's new IONIQ 5 XRT has been spotted for the first time in Korea. Video from people at ShortsCar gives us our first look at the rugged new trim.
The new design on the front, with large bright red hooks, is immediately visible at the beginning of the video.
You'll also notice that it sits a little higher when you're off-road. Hyundai's XRT model has 7″ of ground clearance compared to the standard model's 6″.
Based on the updated 2025 IONIQ 5 (Hyundai's E-GMP platform), the XRT crossover is equipped with a fourth-gen 84 kWh battery and has an EPA-rated range of up to 280 miles (451 km). It also includes a dual-motor (AWD) powertrain with up to 300 hp.
One of the biggest changes in the updated IONIQ 5 is the new NACS charging port for access to Tesla Superchargers.
The XRT trim is expected to start around $49,000. It will be built alongside the updated 2025 IONIQ 5 as the first model range to be produced at its new Metaplant America facility in Georgia.
Hyundai said vehicles built at the facility will be eligible for a $3,750 federal tax credit. When the battery unit opens at the facility next year, Hyundai's US-made EVs are expected to be eligible for the full $7,500 credit.
