Fisker Ocean customers must pay for memory replacement


Owners of the recalled Fisker Ocean electric vehicles will have to pay to have them repaired, according to a notice on the website of the automaker.

First spotted by Autoevolution, Fisker's website says that, for any recall that requires physical inspection and possible repairs, the automaker will provide parts free of charge but will not cover any labor costs related to inspection or repair work due to its ongoing Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings.

It is unclear when the parts will be available. Fisker said they were looking to get them to “authorized service providers” by the end of September, which may not be the kind of news owners want to hear about during multiple recalls.

Fisker had three Ocean recall openings in June of this year alone, including one that may not open. An additional recall for possible water pump failure, affecting 7,545 vehicles, was opened in July.

The company has promised to continue pushing free over-the-air software updates, which can address certain issues without the need to source parts or pay labor, such as the brake update issue that led to another recall in August. However, updates may not go beyond fixes like this, which could leave Ocean frozen in beta due to missing software features.

When automakers fold, dealer fees are often set aside to pay for recalls. But Fisker has no dealers to work with, which seems to leave customers alone. Many of the remaining vehicles may end up being leased by American Leasing, which has made a deal with Fisker to buy them for $14,000 each, with that company possibly making its own arrangements to keep the fleet on the road.
